A company that helps businesses recover costs associated with the mis-selling of energy is expected to create 50 jobs as demand for its services increases.

Business Energy Claims, which is based in Boldon, South Tyneside, initially creates 10 new positions, followed by dozens more in the sales, business development and claims teams.

The company was started by Callum Thompson, who had previously been a senior executive at Utilitywise, one of the country’s first and largest energy brokers until its collapse in 2019. Mr. Thompson set up the company to help companies recoup commissions and hidden losses resulting from the mis-selling of energy contracts.

He said: “Our teams are working hard to help clients who have not been informed of the commissions charged on their contracts and the extent of hidden charges. More and more companies and organizations are realizing that they have been the victims of poorly sold energy contracts.

“As a proud company based in the North East, working across the country, I am delighted that we are able to increase our workforce, offering talented local people the opportunity to join the fight against energy mis-sales. There is great satisfaction in holding energy brokers and suppliers to account and ensuring that businesses, charities, schools, sports clubs and other organizations are rewarded.

Meanwhile, the company revealed that it had recovered around £ 80,000 for a Tyneside hotel which had been the victim of a bad energy sale. The Gibside Hotel in Whickham, Gateshead, was approached by an energy broker in early 2019 to secure better gas and power deals, but ended up with substantial undisclosed charges.

In collaboration with the partner law firm 3Volution, the case was settled by Business Energy Claims at 100% of the claim.

Mr. Thompson said: “This was a shocking case of bad selling and I am delighted that we were able to hold the broker to account.

Gibside Hotel was vindicated in its decision to challenge the way energy contracts were described, with a hidden commission that amounted to tens of thousands of pounds. The energy supplier itself, Gazprom, paid a fee. part of the claim, which says a lot about the issues we’re tackling.

“Unfortunately, this is only the tip of the iceberg, and we continue to pursue a significant number of cases, with a growing list of clients from businesses and organizations across multiple industries.”
