job description

Space and transport planning is fundamental to ensuring that we have an efficient transport system. It ensures that the need for new infrastructure and new developments are balanced against the environmental, social and other impacts they may have. It identifies what development is needed and where, what areas need to be protected or enhanced, and whether a proposed scheme or development is appropriate. No transportation investment can proceed without first satisfying the checks and balances of the planning system. This is an essential part of the delivery of any transportation system.

This is a unique and expandable role, where the role holder will provide expertise in space and transport planning systems and provide advice across multiple modal flows. This will include a strategic review of all primary legislation and regulatory instruments relating to transport planning to ensure that they are aligned with spatial and transport planning systems and are adapted to reflect the modern public service.

With excellent interpersonal skills, the incumbent will be expected to build effective partnerships with a range of colleagues, other departments and stakeholders to broker positive outcomes for the department. Reporting to the Head of Planning, you will also help develop and maintain a professional network of space and transportation planners across the department and our independent bodies. Working with the team and key stakeholders, you will help develop a professional development program for current and future space and transportation planners to attract, develop, nurture and retain talent and planning expertise.

There will be substantial opportunity to grow in this role and help set priorities for the division.
