King’s Professional & Executive Development (KPED) is part of the new Professional and Continuing Education (PACE) School and is a specialist business development unit enabling King’s faculties to deliver professional education to a broad international and domestic audience. We work in partnership with all faculties to design, develop and deliver open and tailored educational programs in line with King’s education strategy. Face-to-face, blended or online, our programs include continuing professional development, executive education and, increasingly, stackable micro-diplomas. We are a small, powerful team with ambitious growth targets in an exciting area of ​​development for King’s College London.

Due to an internal promotion, KPED is now looking to recruit a Business Development Manager with experience and training in business development, financial negotiations, contract review, budgeting, personnel and project management.

The successful candidate will have the ability to understand the purpose and context of existing contracts as well as drive innovation and build networks to support business growth. KPED’s project portfolio is growing rapidly and expanding to include opportunities offered by online and blended modalities. As a senior member of the team, the incumbent will be responsible for creating effective mechanisms to support and enable these businesses to 1) operate effectively 2) operate profitably and 3) build on King’s global brand .

The role is primarily based at King’s Strand Campus; however, the incumbent may be required to travel to other locations on occasion, be prepared to attend evening/weekend events and may be required to undertake domestic and international travel. As part of King’s hybrid work trial, all team members can work remotely for part of the week if they choose.

This position will be offered on a permanent contract.

This is a full-time position – 100% full-time equivalent.

Main responsibilities


  • Provide a central point of contact for business education opportunities (open, personalized, face-to-face, online, blended) for King faculty
  • Creation and delivery of a portfolio of contracts, using King’s expertise in the professional and executive training market, in line with the training strategy
  • Maintain a systems approach to the management and development of the pipeline for professional training
  • Work with the Business Development Manager and colleagues to ensure business plans align with faculty plans and target sectors to grow King’s portfolio of professional education programs
  • Actively seek new opportunities for CPD, executive training and education consultancy projects through, for example, sales pitches, responding to RFPs, PQQs and ITTs, and creating or maintaining partnerships with other HEIs, professional bodies and commercial enterprises/public sector organizations
  • Negotiate new partnerships, including overseas opportunities in the country
  • Evaluate new program proposals from scholars and practitioners; undertake research and propose new course/program proposals to potential clients
  • Facilitate academic and client exchanges to develop innovative tailor-made programs


• Accountable for progress against business case and annual operational plans/objectives for KPED

• Work with senior KPED team to implement the Hub and Spoke model of business development in Faculties of Arts and Sciences

• Provide leadership to project teams in a manner consistent with King’s Guiding Principles: Our Culture


• Cultivate internal relationships, develop and maintain relationships with influencers and academic and professional services stakeholders across the university

• Adopt and develop a continuous improvement approach to business development and professional training

• Share best practices and collaborate with other team members within PACE and across the College

• Build a network of internal subject matter experts across the College to advise Spokes on program development and delivery

• Actively contribute to operational working groups and school-level meetings, gathering information, presenting results and providing feedback to the KPED team as appropriate


• Develop and manage relationships and connectivity with business decision makers, enabling the University to understand market trends and the current and future needs of potential business partners.

• Work with Business Development Manager and Portfolio Development Manager to contribute and identify key marketing and communications messages across physical and digital media

• Identify and commission market information/market intelligence for portfolio and custom development

• Develop a public presence in the industry and network through a variety of B2B business development and networking activities, serving as a conduit for intelligence and two-way learning


• Contribute and promote a culture of continuous development

• Be a collegial and respectful member of the team, always showing consideration for colleagues and direct reports

• Embrace a culture of service to assess, advise and facilitate postgraduate education opportunities

Skills, knowledge and experience

Essential criteria

  1. Undergraduate degree or equivalent experience
  2. Knowledge and understanding of the vocational training market and current trends
  3. Proven track record of business development and new lead generation, ideally in a professional or Executive Education environment
  4. Strong business knowledge and financial planning skills
  5. Knowledge of contracts, intellectual property and other business considerations
  6. Proven skills in influencing and negotiating with a wide range of stakeholders and situations
  7. Excellent computer and presentation skills in the MS Office suite
  8. Autonomous, enterprising, curious and resilient
  9. Meticulous with a high level of attention to detail
  10. Experience managing people, processes, projects and working in high performing teams

Desirable criteria

  1. University or professional degree
  2. Use of project management software/tools/CRM
  3. Knowledge, interest and understanding of higher education
  4. Project Management Diploma
