Chinese smartphone maker Oppo is cutting around 20% of its workforce in software and device teams after merging operations with premium smartphone brand OnePlus, Bloomberg News reported Thursday. The development comes amid COVID-induced chip shortages and economic shocks that have hit the industry.

The job cuts will affect key units involved in customizing the Android skin developed in-house by Oppo, ColorOS, as well as an Internet of Things (IoT) division that develops everything from smartwatches to headphones, internal sources said. to Bloomberg, asking not to be named. .

As a reminder, Oppo merged with OnePlus in June 2021 for further integration between the two brands and to reduce overhead costs. But this strategy has led to the redundancy of certain posts.

Oppo’s R&D team for phones and overseas sales positions has yet to be affected by the cuts, one of those familiar with the matter told Bloomberg.

Challenges on the supply side have already forced smartphone market tracking companies to start slashing their 2021 shipping estimates by 5-10% for the second time this year, import restrictions at airports. and ports in China adding to the woes of brands already plagued by the persistent acute shortage of chipsets.

Its smartphone shipments increased 37% in the second quarter of 2021 and were in fourth position, according to research firm IDC. It lags behind fierce competitors such as China’s Xiaomi and iPhone maker Apple in the global smartphone market.

It has also made large investments to expand into markets such as India, Southeast Asia and Europe. The efforts, however, are not yet rewarded. It is also grappling with a retail slowdown in its territory, China, as the Covid resurgence locks down parts of the country.

Meanwhile, OnePlus has made deeper inroads into the US market, but at the same time it has failed to take Apple and Samsung Electronics head-on among premium customers.

Local rival Huawei Technologies also sold most of its mobile business in 2020 under US sanctions.
